In August 2019, little Smokey was surrendered to a shelter in Louisiana by his owner. And the owner surrendered not only Smokey, but five other dogs too! The owner said Smokey is seven years old. He was completely matted, and so the shelter needed to shave him down. The shelter then reached out to the Blind Dog Rescue, and Smokey came to his BDRA foster home in Virginia.
There are so many good things to say about this special little dog! Smokey is a 7-pound chocolate poodle. He gets along with the other dogs and the cat in his foster home. He enjoys attention from his foster parents and is just learning about lap time! He is crate trained, and sleeps quietly in his crate all night. And, he keeps it dry! When he first arrived at his foster home, he would stand and shake when out in the yard, and did not appear housetrained. But, just a few weeks later, he has gained some confidence and is now not so nervous in the yard, and has done an excellent job with doing his business outside over the past 10 days! He stays clean and dry all night, and also during the day when his foster parents are at work. He is improving with his leash walking too. Smokey would likely not do very well on steps, and anyone adopting him should expect to carry him up and down.
Smokey was neutered soon after he arrived at his foster home, and had a few teeth removed too. He has cataracts in both eyes and so his vision is very limited, but he does see a little. He has dry eye in his left eye, and gets a daily ointment, but otherwise his eyes are stable at this time and need no other medication. He seems to hear very well. Smokey is heartworm negative. He has a mild heart arrhythmia, but this is not a cause for concern, and did not cause a problem during his dental and neuter.
The only concern at this time is that Smokey, who is quite thin, has not gained any weight since arriving in his foster home (three weeks ago). He has a good appetite, and so his foster parents are going to be giving him higher calorie food and feeding him more often. His bloodwork is fine at this time, and there are no clinical signs of concern to explain why he has not gained weight. He might simply need even more food!
Smokey is a dear, very sweet dog who loves to roll around and sometimes dig in a dog bed, and he really enjoys having his head rubbed. He doesn’t ask for much, but appreciates everything he gets. His little tail wags so much now! Whoever adopts him will be very lucky!
Smokey has not been around young children, and would need to be closely supervised when with children, just like all dogs and children should be supervised when they are together.
Smokey is now waiting patiently for the right person to complete an adoption application so he can move on to his forever home!
